FAQ QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
What type of gas does a range use?
Though propane, butane, or even liquefied petroleum gas can be used to power a stove, most gas stoves run on natural gas and require a gas line to the house. Depending on where you live, the requirement of a gas line may be a deal-breaker
Is a gas range Safe?
Older gas burners can spew carbon monoxide (CO), which is toxic. But that's a much smaller concern with modern burner designs, and evidence suggests it's not a long-term health risk anyway—you recover from CO poisoning once the exposure stops
Does gas range need electricity?
A gas stove requires both electricity and gas to function properly. Gas stoves no longer rely on a pilot light to ignite the burners. The ignition source comes from an electric ignitor located at each burner
Do gas ranges have safety features?
Most gas ranges have a safety valve that regulates the flow of gas through the stove. The range's thermostat controls whether the valve is open or closed. When you turn on the burner, the pilot heats up. When the pilot gets hot enough, a sensor in the thermostat opens the valve to allow gas to flow through
Do gas ranges need to be vented?
Proper ventilation for cooking appliances is very important for indoor air quality. The range hood should ventilate to the outside and not simply recirculate and attempt to filter the cooking fumes. This is especially important with gas ranges.
What voltage does a gas range use?
Gas stoves use 120 volts and making the switch to electric will require a larger electrical wire from the circuit breaker. That's why the electrician will also hook up a new 240-volt receptacle.
